Greenbrier County Schools

The 16th largest school district in West Virginia, Greenbrier County Schools serves approximately 5,300 students across nine elementary schools (pre- K through grade five), two middle schools (grades 6-8) and two high schools(grades 9-12). Greenbrier County students are challenged with a demanding curriculum that is reflected in competitive test scores and student honors in nationally recognized competitions. Individual schools within the system have received both national and state recognition as West Virginia Schools of Excellence, West Virginia Exemplary Schools, West Virginia Blue Ribbon Schools, Title 1 Distinguished Schools, and National Blue Ribbon Schools.

Greenbrier County Schools provides an academic atmosphere of high expectations as it strives to equip students with 21st century learning skills necessary for success in today’s global economy. The school system is committed to educating students for the future through the collaborative efforts of students, families, staff and community. Special relationships with community businesses and organizations such as Carnegie Hall, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, Communities in Schools of Greenbrier County, Greenbrier Watershed Association, The Education Alliance, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Westvaco, The Greenbrier and a multitude of community business partners make possible tremendous education opportunities for its students.

Greenbrier County Schools provides a myriad of classroom and extracurricular activities to meet student needs and interests including honors, advanced placement and gifted classes; career and technical education; special education; and athletic and music programs.

The Greenbrier School of Practical Nursing is operated by the Greenbrier County Board of Education as an adult preparatory program sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education.  The course is twelve months in duration and is fully accredited by the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Practical Nurses.

The Tutoring Center


The Tutoring Center is a locally owned and operated 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing specialized one-on-one tutoring.  The Center designs programs suited to the learning styles and needs of individual students based on the results of their intake assessment.  They emphasize building the self-esteem and confidence of students in addition to teaching study and time management skills. The Tutoring Center offers a supportive, non-judgmental environment for students of all ages and abilities to receive the academic support needed for their success. Services include K-12 one-on-one tutoring, high school courses for credit, GED preparation, SAT/ACT preparation, home-schooling assistance, adult literacy, enrichment courses and more.

New River Community and Technical College

The Greenbrier Valley Campus is one of five New River locations providing comprehensive, affordable, high-quality post-secondary education and workforce training programs.  Associate degrees and certificate programs include general business, medical assisting, legal assisting, law enforcement and computer science. Many online and evening courses are available to meet the diverse needs of individuals, businesses and the community.

The Greenbrier Valley Campus offers several unique programs such as welding, machine tool technology and fine arts.  The campus is also a site for the Practical Nursing Program.

In the fall of 2011, New River began a renovation project to transform a building that once served as the Student Activities Center for Greenbrier College into an Arts and Science Building that will house classrooms and studios for the Fine Arts Program, as well as an allied health lab and a student activities center.  A portion of the building in which there is an indoor swimming pool has been leased to the Greenbrier County Commission, which plans to renovate the pool and open it to the public.   

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

WVSOM is the largest medical school in West Virginia with 777 students. For the last 11 years  U.S. News & World Report Magazine’s  annual  “Best Graduate Schools” edition ranked WVSOM among the top medical schools in America educating students for the practice of primary care medicine and practice in medically underserved and rural areas.

The new Clinical Evaluation Center (CEC) is one of most technologically advanced medical education facilities in the U.S. providing learning opportunities using simulated patients (robots) and standardized patients (area residents turned actors) who present assigned medical conditions to the students. Students learn skills working with live “patients” and treating simulated ones that react to a variety of treatments, medications and testing. WVSOM is a major employer and an economic development engine generating in excess of $200 million annually for West Virginia.


Private Schools

There are a few private schools in Greenbrier County that offer a Christian-based curriculum. Seneca Trail Christian Academy, Lewisburg Baptist Academy, and Rainelle Christian Academy provide K-12 instruction. There are also several homeschool networks in the Valley.

Greenbrier Episcopal School is located in Lewisburg and is an independent, coeducational day school enrolling children in grades PreK through eight.  Small in size, the school’s program is characterized by high academic expectations, personal attention, and respect for the dignity of every human being.


Libraries

Six libraries with more than 100,000 volumes offer a wealth of programs for readers of all ages living in Greenbrier County. One of the newest of these is a state-of-the-art facility located at Academy Park in the vicinity of North House Museum and New River Community and Technical College. An efficient interlibrary loan system affords residents access to any public or academic library in West Virginia through their local library.
